A

Acne: an inflammatory condition of the sebaceous glands which is identified and characterized by comedones and pimples, commonly on the face, back, and chest

Age Spot: A light brown patch on the skin that usually occurs with age or overexposure to the sun in light skin people; Also known as a liver spot (why I don't know)

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA's): Used in chemical peels to erase fine lines and give the skin a smoother appearance; Glycolic acid and Lactic Acid are the 2 most common

Antiseptic: Capable of preventing infection by inhibiting the growth of microorganis

Anti-Pollution formulations contain a barrier-like complex that form a surface film on the skin to shield it from external aggressors


B
BB Cream: also known as Blemish Balm, Blemish Base or Beblesh Balm, is a cosmetic item sold mainly in East and Southeast Asia use as the base make-up often to replace the foundation. They create a flawless finish as it moisturizes and nourishes the skin.

Benzoyl peroxide: Topical antibacterial agent used to treat acne. Found in more over the counter and prescription 

Blackhead: A plug of keratin and sebum within a hair follicle that is blackened at the surface of the skin; Caused by excess oils accumulated in the sebaceous glands

Bleeding is when lipstick runs into the wrinkles and creases around the lips. Bleeding can be prevented with the use of a lip liner.

Blush brush: Usually a bigger size of brush to apply the blush on the cheek and place you want to shade.

Blusher is applied over foundation to give your skin a healthy blush or glow. Blusher comes as either powder or cream. It should be used lightly as too much blusher can spoil your look.

Blush On often applied to the cheek area of the face with a makeup brush in order to even out skin tone or to add more color.

Botanical: Related to a plant like nature

Botox: A trademark for a preparation of botulinum, a toxin used to treat strabismus and smooth facial wrinkles.Bronzer


C

Cheek Stain is a water-based gel cheek tint that gives you a natural flush—exactly like someone just pinched your cheeks! 

Chemical Peel: A procedure used to reduce/remove skin blemishes or wrinkles by applying a gentle acid that produces a mild superficial burn

Collagen: A protein found in bone, cartilage, skin, and other connective tissue.  Helps to strengthen skin and improve skin elasticity

Comedogenic: Aggravates existing acne or produces acne

Comedo (Comedones is plural): Commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads.  They are formed when dirt is trapped inside of hair follicles

Compact Powder: A small case containing a mirror, pressed powder, and a powder puff.

Concealer : A concealer is used to hide or conceal spots and blemishes on the skin. You should get a concealer that is a close match to your nature skin tone. Concealer can also be used to hard dark circles under your eyes

Contour makeup changes the entire look of your face. Facial features are viewed as a combination of light and shadows. By applying a dark tone, you create a false shadow, making it appear as if there is depth.

Corrector: Color correctors work to counteract specific flaws in facial complexions.

Cosmeceutical: A cosmetic product that has medicinal properties such as an Antiwrinkle Cream 

Cream Cheek is the melting gel-type texture, which is silky-soft on your fingers, becomes dry from the instant you apply it to your cheeks.

Dermatologist-Tested has undergone trials for skin-friendliness under dermatological conditions.

Dermis: The sensitive connective tissue layer of the skin located below the epidermis


E

Eczema: An acute inflammation of the skin causing the skin to become red, itchy and the outbreak of lesions that may be crusty and filled with fluid.

Elastin is a protein that makes young skin springy and resilient.

Emollients are a skin care substances that deliver moisture to the epidermis and soften and smooth the skin

Esthetic: Pertaining to beauty (also spelled aesthetic)

Epidermis: The protective outer layer of the skin.

Exfoliate: To remove a layer of skin (It's important to exfoliate with a skin care product that refines the skin at least once a week to remove dead skin cells)

Eyelash curler: Comes in metal or plastic tool to curl the eyelash

Eyelash comb: An eyelash comb is an implement generally used to separate eyelashes after applying mascara. Eyelash combs help to keep the eyelashes from clumping together and can give them a fuller, more natural appearance 

Eyelashes GlueA special glue to stick the false eyelashes on the rim of the eyes (eye lashes area)

Eyeliner: used along the rim of the eye. There are many different types of eyeliner that can be used to create effects from the dramatic to the subtle. There are four main categories of eyeliner available: liquid, powder-based pencil, wax-based pencil, and kohl. Liquid and pencil eyeliners are available in nearly every imaginable color, including glitter varieties.

Eye gloss is applied on the eyelids and under the eyebrows. It comes in a vast array of colors and should be used to enhance your natural eye color in gel or liquid form.

Eye Shadow Primer is used to coat the eyelids prior to the application of eye shadow so that the eye shadow can be applied in a smooth, even layer and so that the eye shadow will stay in place on the eyelid. 

Eye Shadow is a cosmetic that is applied on the eyelids and under the eyebrows. It comes in a vast array of colors and should be used to enhance your natural eye color in powder.

Eye shadow brush: brush that uses to apply the eye shadow. Depend on the area or eye shadows that will be apply, the size may vary.

Eyebrow Gel: Many women love to use eyebrow gel as the final step in grooming their eyebrows. Tinted eyebrow gel can add extra color for a more dramatic look.

Eyebrow Pencil: An eyebrow pencil, sometimes referred to as a brow pencil, is shaped like an ordinary pencil and contains makeup instead of lead inside The pencil is utilize to draw on new eyebrows or enhance their existing eyebrows by applying the makeup to the desired area. The pencil shape makes application easier and faster. Not only is it easy to grip, but the pointed end lets the user control which areas the makeup is applied to.

Eyebrow Powder: Same as Eyebrow Pencil but comes in powder contents. Usually contain 2 or more colors and by shading the eye brow, they look more natural.


F

Face Powder: is used to set foundation after it has been applied. It comes in two types loose powder and cake

Face Primer is a cosmetic base coat that is put on beneath foundation. Applied much like foundation; it extends makeup wear and helps to create a flawless finish.

False Eyelashes: Not everyone has thick, luscious lashes, but by adding false ones with exceptional care, everyone can look like they do. Usually sticks with the lush glue.

Foundation: is a skin colored cosmetic applied to the face to create an even, uniform color to the complexion, to cover flaws, and, sometimes, to change the natural skin tone

Free Radicals are molecules responsible for premature aging and tissue damage, although antioxidant ingredients can help prevent them settling on skin


G

Glitter cosmetics are any type of makeup products that contain glitter; this can be everything from lipstick to eyeliner to body glitter. Some have large, noticeable pieces of glitter in them, while others just provide a light shimmer.

Heated Eyelash Curler is Eyelash Curler which heated to curl your eyelash. Usually the heated one makes easier to curl the lash and last longer.

Jojoba: Natural liquid wax deprived from the seed of a desert shrub. Improves skin elasticity and softness. Treatstretch marks, wrinkles and dry skin; acts as a moisturizer.

Keratin: A non-water soluble protein located in the upper layer of the skin, hair, and nails

Kojic Acid: skin lightening agent.


L

Lactic Acid: A chemical compound found in sour milk, fruit and produced in the muscles during exercise

Light-Diffusing are reflective molecules that bounce light away from fine lines and wrinkles.

Lip balm is a wax-like substance applied topically to the lips of the mouth to relieve chapped or dry lips, angular cheilitis, stomatitis, or cold sores.

Lip Brush: Thin and Fine Brush that use to apply Lipsticks or Lip Gloss.

Lip Exfoliator: Lip enhancement is possible through a variety of methods. To soften lips, a lip exfoliator may be used.

Lip gloss is a product used primarily to give lips a glossy lustre and sometimes subtle color. It is distributed as a liquid or a soft solid (not to be confused with lip balm, which generally has medicinal or soothing purposes). It can be completely clear, translucent, or various shades of opacity, including frosted, glittered, glassy, and metallic finishes.

Lip liner: used to outline and define the lips. Available from dozens of brands and in a rainbow of colors, lip liner can be applied to create subtle enhancement or make a bold statement. Makeup experts are split on the proper use of lip liner; like many cosmetic products, its popularity waxes and wanes in accordance with current fashions.

Lip Primer: Prepare the lip for the makeup application, they pamper the lip and create a protective base for longer lasting. The primers give the makeup something to grab onto and help your makeup last longer, because the makeup primers create a smooth and perfect surface.

Lip Stain: Designed to stain the lips with long-lasting color which will resist wear. Unlike lipstick, it does not contain wax. Many cosmetics companies offer a line of lip stains with their cosmetics products, and people can also make their own.

Lipstick: Contains pigments, oils, waxes, and emollients that applies color, texture, and protection to the lips. Many varieties of lipstick are known. As with most other types of makeup, lipstick is typically, but not exclusively, worn by women. The use of lipstick dates from the ancient times.

Lose Powder: Creates a "soft focus" effect to the skin. Masks fine lines and imperfections for a radiant complexion. The incredibly soft and invisible powder is great for on-screen and everyday wear

Liquid foundation is a skin coloured cosmetic applied to the face to create an even, uniform colour to the complexion, to cover flaws, and, sometimes, to change the natural skintone come in liquid form.


M

Mascara: A cosmetic applied to thicken, lengthen, and usually darken the eyelashes

Matte is a non-shiny, dense color formula.

Mattifying is formulated to minimize facial shine by absorbing excess oils.

Melanin: A naturally occurring dark pigment found in skin, hair, fur, and feathers.

Metallic is a cosmetic effect created by reflective pigments in metal shades such as gold, silver, copper and bronze.

Mineral Make-up is made of natural, finely ground minerals derived from the earth without chemical binders, dyes or preservatives This is appropriate for all skin types and recommended for those with sensitive, acne skins.


N

Natural: The term “natural” is not regulated by the FDA, so Sephora has set our own high internal standards. The brands we call “natural” use mainly plant-based and naturally-derived ingredients, and they’re formulated with little to no parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances or dyes, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s), or Triclosan

Non-comedogenic is a term applied to oils, lotions, and skin creams that do not block pores. 


O

Ophthalmologist: Tested products have been approved by ophthalmologists so as not to aggravate eyes. Especially useful for contact lens wearers

Organic: Refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic ingredients are grown free of pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides, and their production must be certified as organic by an independent organization (like the USDA, BDIH, EcoCert, or the Soil Association) to claim this on their labels.


P

Palette: A combination of several colors of eye shadows, blush on, lipstick or other make up in one package.

Powder brush:  Usually bigger size of brush to apply the powder for your face or body.

Pearlescent shades are those that contain iridescent molecules wherein two colors can be fused together.

Phytochemical: A plant derived chemical that is not necessarily nutrient essential but may have certain health benefits

Pigments are the dyes in make-up that provide a rich hue and depth of color

Polymers can be synthetic or naturally produced to thicken and bind make-up formulations so as to change their consistency. 

Powder Puff: A soft pad for applying powder to the skin

Pressed Powder: pressed lose powder, and usually come in a small compact with the mirror and puff and giving you a gentle, matte finish that lasts

Retin A: Taking from Vitamin A, and usually effective for acne/cure pimples.

Rosecea - The condition of the skin when it gets irritated/red.


S

Salicylic acid: A white crystalline substance used to treat skin conditions and as a preservative to make aspirin, dyes or perfumes

Satin is a non-shiny, but smooth colour formula.

Scar: A mark left on the skin after a healed wound, burn or condition such asacne.

Scrub: a cleanser that exfoliates dead skin cells.

Sebaceous gland: A gland that secretes sebum usually into a hair follicle and lubricates the hair and skin
Sebum is the natural oil produced by the skin.

Shading: Usually in powder, cream or liquid content. Using few levels of different tones of color to make part of the face lighter or darker. This is to create the dept to your face, or hide some part of your face such as double chin.

Shea Butter:  A whitish or yellowish fat obtained from the seeds of the shea tree. It's used to make soap, lip butter and candles.
Sheer is the color of cosmetics shades with minimum color pigment, that are often translucent in finish.

Shimmery: The result of the product which contain the shinny powder or glitter

Silicone Oils used in cosmetics to keep formulas in liquid form and aid smooth application. When described as 'Volatile' they evaporate quickly on exposure to air.

Sodium Laurel (or Laureth) Sulfate: A very harmful ingredient (a detergent and surfactant) found in most personal care products (ex: toothpaste, soap, shampoo)

SPF (Sun Protection Factor): The degree to which a sunscreen protects the skin from ultraviolet rays

Sponge: Sponge use for applying the foundation and powder.

Stick Foundation: Function same as liquid foundation, but in stick type. Usually thicker compare to the liquid foundation.

Sunscreen (SPF) prevents harmful UV rays reaching the skin, which could cause premature aging.

Surfactant: A wetting agent allowing easier spreading of a liquid

T

Talc: used to absorb excess oil. Common ingredient in mineral makeup.

Tea Tree Oil: a natural preservative with antiseptic properties.

Translucent is almost transparent in finish.

Thickening mascara: mascara that is heavier than the others, build up a volumizing coat.

Tinted moisturizer: a facial moisturizer with color / similar to foundation/

Toner: product that return the skin to its natural pH, removes makeup residue and dirt

T-zone: areas of the face that include forehead, chin and nose


U

Undertone : cool or warm tones of the skin

UVA : ultraviolet light A

UVB : ultraviolet light B

UV is ultra-violet light from the sun.


V

Vitamin A: important for : skin elasticity, moisture content, suppleness. A lack of vitamin A can cause skin to become dry and hardened.

Vitamin B: antioxidant

Vitamin C: major antioxidant. Slow the production of hyperpigmentation, provide UV protection. A preservative and antioxidant used in cosmetic creams.Known also as ascorbic acid.

Vitamin D: necessary for bones and teeth. The body can produce its own vitamin D from sun exposure.Known also as Calciferol.

Vitamin E is sometimes called tocopherol, vitamin E is a renowned anti-oxidant and is often used in cosmetic formulas with anti-aging benefits.


W

Water-soluble vitamins: vitamin C and Vitamin B complex.

Whiteheads: tiny, pearly, white raised spots. They are caused due to excessive secretion of sebum oil. The whiteheads usually show up as tiny white spots around the eyes.

Witch hazel: herb that treats bruises, swelling. It is soothing to the skin and helps regulate sebaceous glands; shrinks enlarged pores, sooths inflammation, dries our spots and reduces oil secretion.
